It's been my experience that shifting to first from neutral while at a stop is VERY difficult unless you roll the bike around, double/tripl/quadruple clutch, etc.... I try to shift into first just before I stop rolling. Then just keep it smooth and engage the clutch fully (squeeze it all the way, then shift) as you go up and down the gears. Also, make sure your clutch is engaged completely; I've seen lots of folks who adjust too much freeplay into the lever and never really get the thing fully engaged. (Of course, the flipside is making it too tight so that in never fully disengages- leading to a prematurely worn out clutch....)
